The First Gone Fishin' Fishing Lure.

Hi there,

Not long ago the Gone Fishin' exhibition opened at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
Yes, it is an exhibition about fishing, about the history of fishing in the NT.
This is a great exhibition, and it is free to get in, so if you are in Darwin go and see it.
The show will be on till September 2012.
As part of the merchandising for this exhibition the museum shop now stock some lures branded with the exhibition logo.

The lure is a Big B52's from Reidy's, a very popular lure in the Top End of Australia.
I did get one of them, and intend to use it on my next fishing outing, very soon.

What does it look like?
Have a look:

Nice and silver.

Close up of the logo.

This is for one side of the lure, the other side is marked with the logo of the Northern Territory Government, with the Sturt's Desert Rose:

Northern Territory Government logo.

Here is a fishing lure that will certainly end up in the realm of fishing Australiana.
A good one for any collector and anglers.
In this shinny silver livery, this lure should produce the goods.
I just can't wait to test it.

The museum shop assistant, told me that another lure with the exhibition logo, a Taipan, from Reidy's again, was going to hit the shelves very soon.
I am quite impatient to see it, and yes, to had it to my tackle box too.
As soon as I will have one, you will be able to see it on this very blog.

But we may have to wait a bit before it happens, as I really don't know when the new one will be delivered to the museum.

But hey, it could be worse.
Have a good day,
Me.

7 Fishing Lures For The Collection.

Hi there,

Yes I got a bit spoiled by Rossco once again, he offered me seven new, old fishing lures for my collection.
Rossco is a well respected member of the FFF forum.

First comes a Snarl from Killalure:

The Killalure Snarl.

So it is not Billy Idol snarl, this is the Killalure one, but I am really happy to finally have this lure which was missing to my collection. This lure not being produced any more, I was always on the lookout for one to show up at the op-shop or at a lawn sale, and it came to me in the form of a present.
Isn't it nice?

Now is a lure that look a bit like the Snarl:

The Killer Bait.

It is in fact a Killer Bait, an American lure, while the Killalure Snarl is an Australian one.
It is interesting to see them side by side.

Then a lure from Reidy's:

The Aqua Rat.

I love the Aqua Rats (I didn't had one in this colour), and might do a post just about them soon, as it was a very important lure for Reidy's, it put them on the world map of fishing lures.
Stay tuned for more about it.

And here is the JJ's lure:

Stumper jumper from JJ's Lure.

Once again a lure that I had none of in my small collection.
And I always like nice and simple colour like this one, white and blue.

The Manns:
Manns +20.

Manns are American fishing lures, that are commonly used for fishing in Australia.
I do have a few in my collection and like them too.
And interesting thing with this one, is the line attached to it.
If this is the line that the last angler to use this lure used to fish with it... He or she must have been after some kind of very big fish ...

And talking of big fish:

The Barra Spoon by Halco.

Yes it is called the Barra Spoon, but it is also used by many people to troll for big pelagic.
In fact the first and only time I used one of these myself, was to troll in Darwin Harbour, and I got a nice Spanish Mackerel on it.
This lure is an old classic among the fishing lures used in the Top End.

And one advertising lure:

Classic Barra XXXX Gold.

Yes fishing lures with advertising on them have a special place in my collection, and are in fact the biggest part of it.
This is even what started it all for me.
This one is a Classic Barra +10 with the logo of the beer XXXX Gold from Queensland.
After a bit of research I was able to find that the Classic Barra, with this very logo from XXXX Gold were made to be distributed during a big fishing competition to all the participant. These lures were not for sale, so I am very happy to have it.

All these lures have been fished, and this is how I like my lures: when they have worked for a living.

Thanks again Rossco, these lures are a welcome addition to the collection.

Now, I realise that some of you don't comprehend why I will not fish with these lures, and will keep them dry. You may think that this is a waste of some perfectly usable fishing lures...

But hey, it could be worse.
Have a good day,
Me.

Do You Want A Fishing Sponsor?

Hi there,

Do you want some free lures, coming to you under the form of a fishing sponsor?
Well here might be your chance to it:

Feeling lucky?

If you think that you have what it takes, just go for it and good luck!
You may find yourself being sponsored by a fishing lure manufacturer.

I have to say, that I have never fished with the WildBait lures yet, so I can't say much about them, this is just something I saw on FaceBook.

So yes, I did send them an email to try to be among the chosen ones.
And maybe one of you will win the favour instead of me...

But hey, it could be worse.
Have a good day,
Me.

I Was In A Fishing Magazine.

Hi there,

Two photos of me practicing the noble art of angling have been published in a fishing magazine. On one of the images, you can see me still in the heat of the action, bringing a Barramundi to the net. In the other one, it is the more classic "bragging pic", where I proudly hold my catch.
The magazine is nothing else than the very good North Australian Fishing & Outdoors.
My favourite fishing magazine, as it is about the only one that issue after issues is relevant to someone fishing in Darwin.

Here is the Magazine:

In this very issue.

In both photographs I am wearing the fishing shirt that Colin, the boss of Reidy's lures had given me as a present. In the first photo, I am also actually catching a fish with a lure made by Reidy's, called The Judge.
And here it is:

A very focused Rambling Expat.

In this image, the Barramundi was just about to jump out of the water and make a last run before being netted.

And now, lets brag:

Look at that!

In fact it is not the same fish than in the previous image, it is from another day, but still with my lucky shirt.
Both fishes were caught during the Top End Barra Series last year.
The first at the mouth of the Adelaid River, in Arrabmundi's boat. The second one in Darwin harbour, from Dingo's boat.

I did not send any of the photos to the magazine, but I suspect that Dingo, one of the organisers of the Top End Barra series has sent the images.
This was a good and amusing surprise for me when I purchased the magazine.

And yes I know, in none of these photographs I am holding a metre plus Barramundi...
The Metery club hasn't open it's doors to me yet.

But hey, it could be worse.
Have a good day,
Me.

No Cyclone For Us.

Hi there,

Yes this is a good news, we didn't get any cyclone this time around.
We just lost one banana tree in the backyard due to the wind, and that was today, once the cyclone threat was gone for good...

The fallen banana tree.

And this is a very good thing for every body.
Especially for the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, who will have tomorrow night the opening of it's fishing exhibition called Gone Fishin'.

So this is with a happy mind that I am now waiting for this event to unfold.

Even if for my lunch break yesterday I had to watch the beach from inside of the car.
Like the old folks, who eats fish and chips from the front seat of their sedan. Parked at the end of the wharf, with the horses race on the radio and the air cond purring along...

View from my car yesterday, during lunch.

Yes there might not be much fishing to be done this coming weekend, and we had to postpone the little one birthday party because of the heavy rain. And as said before we did lost a banana tree.

But hey, it could be worse.
Have a good day,
Me.

Cyclone Warning.

Hi there,

We are now on cyclone watch, with a chance for a cyclone to hit latter during the day.
At the moment it is just a tropical low, but it is moving towards the coast and might become a cyclone.
The rain and winds are already pretty intense.
So it might be a few days before the next post on this blog.
But hopefully it will miss us and fizzle.

The little one is very disappointed, because they closed the schools...

But hey, it could be worse.
Have a good day,
Me.

Three New Old Fishing Lures.

Hi there,

Here comes three new old fishing lures, latest addition to my little collection.
I got these lures as a present from Doors Off a member of the FFF Forum.
Thanks Doors Off.

The first lure on the top of the image is a Halco Combat.
But today's this lure comes with a different bib, they don't make them like that anymore...

Then comes a Reidy's Taipan, but with the eyes and bib different than what they look like on the lures made today. And the Quantas colour on this lure is also a variant that I was yet to own or even see, so very happy with it.
(Australian call the red heads and white bodies fishing lures Quantas, in reference to the colours of their national airline).

The third lure, the one on the bottom of the image is a Goulburn Jack from Reidy's too.
Once again with different eyes that what the Reidy's lures have today, and in a colour that is no longer on the catalogue.
And both of these Reidy's lures have the company logo on the back of the lure, another thing that is not done like this anymore.
These Reidy's lures are locally made in Darwin, and are among my favourite to collect.

Want to see them?
Have a look:

Three nice fishing lures.

I like the heart shaped bib of the Goulburn Jack, I am yet to fish with one of them, but have seen one being fished with success in the past, so I should try them one day.

And sorry for the quality of the photo, it was made with my phone, as my computer is down at the moment.

But hey, it could be worse.
Have a good day,
Me.
